Politicians Visit CDC

Local politicians including Commissioner Jim Henry of the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Senator Jim Tracy, Representative Pat Marsh, and County Mayor Eugene Ray, visited the Shelbyville CDC November 30th. During the visit they received a tour of the facilities and talked to clients and families from the Early Intervention, Family Support, and Independent Support Coordination programs.

Christian Comedian Michael Kelly Performs for GEI

Giles County Child Development Center is holding an evening fundraiser on September 13th, 7:00 p.m., at the Martin Methodist College Martin Hall Auditorium. Michael Kelley is a Christian impersonator and comedian who has performed all over the country and for the troops overseas.

"Voices that Change"

Michael Kelley's show, "Voices that Change", started out as a vocal impressionist show when Michael worked with Princess Cruises. After many years of performing at sea Michael developed a passion in his heart to start using his voices to help non-profit organizations and ministries across the country, so the voices started to change and became voices to bring hope for non-profit organizations. Not only that, he also wanted his songs to be an encouragement to people and their faith. Michael likes to relate to all groups of people, so he started performing popular secular songs from sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties, but with a faith based message. By using over fifty of his favorite singers, actors, and politicians, Michael gives his testimony throughout the show about how God has taken him through the ups and downs of his life. Although some of the songs weren't penned as "Christian" songs, Michael has altered the songs so that the lyrics are creative and bring glory to the Lord. And they will truly make you laugh. Just to give a few examples:

Trail Ride Benefits Giles County Child Development

The Helping Hands Trail Ride was a success, despite Mother Nature's attempts to interfere. Riders briefly interrupted their ride when severe weather arrived, dashing for home base with only minor scrapes resulting. When weather calmed, they were out and riding again, working up an appetite for the barbecue dinner that followed the ride.
Many thanks to the participants and their families who helped raised funds for the children of Giles County Child Development.

Packaging Professionals Win MEI Golf Tournament

Dennis McNeal and his team of golfers from Packaging Professionals were Championship Flight first place winners in Marshall County Child Development's 13th Annual Waste Managment Helping Hands Golf Classic held May 12th. The golf tournament was held at Saddle Creek Golf Course in Lewisburg, TN and is one of the largest sources of funding for the Center.

Susan McGee, marketing director for Christian Care Center of Bedford County, received the top honor as a person "who has a leadership role that develops herself and others, exemplifies leadership qualities outside the business world and throughout the community, and has an impact that is beneficial to Bedford County.

Pat Thomas, administrative assistant for Bedford County Department of Finance, was named Secretary of the Year. For her long-time service to the community, Martha Deason was awarded Volunteer of the Year and Sarah Hunt received the Faithful Service Award.

Hosted by Councilwoman Kay Rose, the program featured Stacy Case, WZTV Fox 17 news anchor as special guest speaker.

Laurel Stone, Child Care Resource & Referral Specialist, will appear on the Tullahoma local TV station Channel 6 this week. She appeared on the program to promote the Week of the Young Child and spoke about the services provided by CCR&R, and discussed early literacy strategies that parents and caregivers can use with children. In addition, she stressed the importance of thanking the providers who care for our children. The program will air Thursday, April 7, at 9:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Marshall Elementary Donates Food

Marshall Elementary School donated over 1,400 canned food items and paper products to Marshall County Child Development Center.

For several years, Jason Donahue, a teacher at MES, has rallied the children to bring in items on their 100th day of school. Marshall Elementary serves children from kindergarten through 6th grade.

The CDC appreciates their continued support. This year's donations filled two vans.

Giles County Child Development Center in conjunction with Znazzie Upscale Consignment Shop of Pulaski will host a fundraising fashion show. Beverly Murrey owns the consignment shop. "A Carousel of Spring Fashion Show and Luncheon" will be held Thursday, March 31st, at the Pulaski Recreation Center from Noon until 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 per person or $90 for a table of eight.

Marshall County Child Development Center's Center Manager, Becky Jamison, decided last week that she needed a change. She couldn't decide what type of hairstyle she'd like, but she knew she'd like to cut her hair a little shorter.
She researched and found out that Locks for Love take donated hair and turn it into hair pieces for children who suffer from long term medical hair loss. Hair ten inches or longer could be used to make a hair piece, though shorter lengths were sold to help with expenses.
Becky hasn't had short hair since the age of five, but she was determined to help a child in need. She took the plunge and now has an awesome short hairstyle and someone's daughter or son will benefit from her sacrifice.

ISC Receives Highest DIDD Rating

Independent Support Coordination of the CDC has received the highest Quality Assurance Rating given by the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, "Exceptional Performance".
The Quality Assurance section of the DIDD surveys contracted community-based providers to determine levels of performance related to the quality of services provided. Types of providers surveyed include day and residential providers, Independent Support Coordinator agencies and clinical service providers. Key indicators included in formulating the Quality Assurance Rating include: Access & Eligibility; Individual Planning & Implementation; Safety & Security; Rights, Respect & Dignity; Health; Choice & Decision Making; Relationships and Community Membership; Opportunities for Work; Provider Capabilities & Qualifications; Administrative Authority & Financial Accountability.

The Marshall County Child Development Center will be participating in the Marshall County Red Cross Christmas Village. The CDC children have been hard at work making handprint Christmas cards to sell at the event. The CDC booth will feature information about the CDC and offer coupons for free developmental screening to children under 3 years old. They will be selling hand made Christmas cards and ornaments.

Christmas Village will be on November 20th from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Powder Room, located 3-1/2 blocks west of Lewisburg Square by Borden's Storage. There will be hundreds of items there available for purchase including charcoal portraits, baked goods, jewelry, Christmas decorations, purses, painted glassware, and much, much more.

Admin's Halloween Contest

The Admin Department decorated pumpkins and held a contest to guess which staff member decorated the pumpkin and what famous personality it represented. No one recognized Al Roker (photo on left), but everyone had a good time speculating and making wild guesses. Other pumpkin personalities included Julia Roberts, Jack from Jack-in-the-Box restaurant fame, Garfield, Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny.

Jim Singleton from Admin, Sheri Lowe from ISC-Shelbyville, and Tammy Lane from Bedford Child Development each won a $25 gift certificate to the restaurant of their choice.

GEI's Tattie Bogle Pirate Entry

The Giles County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Trail of the Tattie Bogle Pirates again this year with Pulaski area merchants creating their own Tattie Bogle Pirate and placing them in locations around Pulaski Square.

"We enjoy creating inexpensive things to do in the community that puts a smile on everyone's face. It was amazing how many people you would see stopping at all the Tattie Bogle locations and posing in pictures with them," Chamber Executive Director Donna Baker said. "Not only is this project a lot of fun, it also gets local, state and regional attention for our community."

The Giles County Child Development Center's entry is the "Pirate of the 100 Acre Wood", better known as Tigger. Patty Clifton, Center Manager posing with Tigger, says, "We will display it on the grounds of the Court House on the Square. Cross your fingers and hope we win the contest for more PR for our Center!"

SCHS Interact Decorates Bedford Child Development

Southern Expressions Art Show is hosting the annual Southern Expressions Art Show on October 8^th, 2010 from 7-9pm, at the Maury County Arts Guild. This year we have 19 participants. Many are new to this annual event, while several are returning from the past 5 years. On September 14^th, 2010, Southern Expressions Art Show and Whole Foods Market, in Cool Springs/Franklin are “partnering” to celebrate Whole Foods 30^th anniversary and the new partnership with Southern Expressions Art Show. Whole Foods has graciously offered to support this event this year by catering this entire event, at their expense. Both of these events are free and open to the public. Marshall Early Intervention Teambuilding Day

Marshall Early Intervention spent their teambuilding day earlier this year on a scenic drive to Lynchburg, TN. There they toured the Jack Daniels's Distillery and enjoyed lemonade at the end of the tour before heading to Lynchburg's town square for shopping and lunch at the Iron Kettle.

After window shopping and wandering through the stores they headed for home, stopping at a garage sale where some staff members made some great buys.

Garrett Gordon Honored at Governing Board Meeting

Garrett Gordon was honored July 22nd for eight years of service as Chairman of the Governing Board. He has regretfully resigned from the board in order to spend more time with his family. We will greatly miss his presence in future meetings and are very grateful for the time he has given.

Water Day at Bedford Child Development

The children at the Bedford County Child Development Center found a way to beat the heat by participating in Water Day. The day was filled with water activities including car washing, bubble blowing, running through sprinklers and just sitting under a cooling stream of water from the hose.
Between water activities they visited with animals from a local farm including baby goats, chickens, and puppies.

Imagination Library Board Hosts Reception

The Imagination Library of Lincoln County hosted a reception honoring the program's Sponsors of the Month and One of 100 donors, on June 27.
The Governor's Books from Birth Foundation partners with Dollywood Foundation only for book selection and database management. The Imagination Library of Lincoln County must pay $15 annually for each child enrolled in the program. Locally, a group of donors known as the "One of 100" and "Sponsors of the Month" have provided the funding.
The success achieved by this program is that 1,423 children in Lincoln County are receiving books from the Imagination Library. "This means that 75 percent of eligible children in Lincoln County are going to the mailbox each month to get their free book," says Celia Wallace, volunteer executive director.
The first books were mailed to 21 children in June of 2005. In the five years of the program, over 60,000 books have been mailed to the preschoolers of Lincoln County.

ISC Program's 1st Certification Completed

The CDC Independent Support Coordination program recently completed its first internal certification. Jimmy Morris was the first ISC staff member to be certified according to state requirements by the CDC ISC program. Congratulations to Jimmy for being our first!

Special Olympian Competes

Annie-Grace Jensen, 11, recently competed in the Special Olympics Summer Games for Tennessee Area 13, held in Coffee County at Tullahoma High School. She represented Bedford County and Liberty School, where she is in the fourth grade. She participated in the games' opening parade where she proudly carried posters made by her friends and classmates in Tonya Donegan's class. Annie-Grace participated in the softball throw and the 50-meter run. She is the daughter of Christy and Aksel Jensen IV of Shelbyville. Christy Jensen is the Coordinator of the CDC's Family Support Program.

Helping Hands Golf Classic Results

Waste Management sponsored the 12th Annual Helping Hands Golf Classic, a major fundraiser that helps support the Marshall County Child Development Center throughout the year. This annual tournament has raised more than $580,000 for the CDC over the past twelve years. All proceeds from the tournament stay in Marshall County for the Child Development Center and the children that are served.

Thank you to all of our sponsors for your "big hands helping little hands".

The steering committee has worked hard the last several months to put together this tournament. Serving on the committee were Anna Childress, Ronald Robinson, Tommy Bowles, Scott Tepedino, Stacey Cothran, Barbara Caps, and Larry Lance.

More than 50 vendors contributed items for the silent auction. Not only were donations received from local businesses in Lewisburg, contributions came from as far away as Memphis, Gatlinburg, Atlanta, and Kentucky.

Volunteers from the community were essential to the smooth running of the tournament. Our thanks to Terri Douglas, Wendy Griffin, Bill Wallace, John Hursh, Angie Bass, Rene Lance, Patsy Allen, Bruce and Barbara Bailey, Teresa Winnette, Denise Tadajewski, and Kim Sampson. Recently Kathy Chapman of Independent Support Coordination stopped in at Gateway Tire in Columbia to ask about the cost of replacement tires. She thought the clerk behind the counter looked familiar but when prompted, "Wynonna?", Kathy shook her head and said no.

Yes, the tire store clerk was Wynonna Judd who was filming at the tire store for a prank show on CBS called "I Get That A Lot". The episode aired on CBS May 19th.

Kathy went above and beyond the call of duty for the CDC. She earned four free tires for the CDC vehicle by singing the "Four Free Tires Song" with the help of Wynonna. "Who's Brody?" Fundraiser

Brody's Birthday Bash will be held at the Rock Creek Park on May 30th to raise money for the Child Development Center of Marshall County and to raise awareness for Fragile X Disorders and Autism. Brody is an exceptional child who has Fragile X, Autism, ADHD, hearing loss, strabismus, sensory processing disorder, and is nonverbal. The band Mammoth Jack is coming back to play for us. Check out their website http://www.mammothjack.com/ and tell all your friends that they are coming. You will never meet a nicer guy than Matt Rossi. There will be a rock climbing wall, face painting, dunk tank and other events for the children as well as BBQ by Pop's Grilling Team and SONIC for hotdogs and tater tots. May Day Open House at CCR&R

Sixty-Nine providers attended the Open House May 1st. Providers played games involving Parent Engagement and they worked on Make It and Take It projects in Early Literacy and Cultural Diversity. Many new items added recently to the lending library were on display. Refreshments were served, door prizes were awarded and names were drawn for NAFCC scholarships.

LEI Marks 25th Anniversary

FAYETTEVILLE, TN - The Child Development Center (CDC) is entering into its 25th year of providing Early Intervention Services for the children of Lincoln County.

The program's objective is to identify children with developmental delays and disabilities at an early age and provide educational/early intervention services to meet the specific needs of the child and family. Children, ages birth to three who have a developmental delay or disability, attend the CDC at no cost to their families.

Eligibility for the program is based on a qualifying diagnosed condition, degree of prematurity or a child's percentage of developmental delay. Tennessee Early Intervention System determines whether children meet the guidelines for early intervention services.

The CDC operates year round, providing early intervention services, focusing on children's speech, language, cognitive, motor and social development. Children ages birth through 18 months receive these services in their home or childcare setting. At 18 months, parents of these children have the option of transitioning their child into the center-based setting of the CDC.

Transportation is provided within a five-mile radius of the facility for children attending the center-based program.

Children attending the CDC participate in a wide variety of activities to promote overall growth and development. Each day consists of art, music, circle time, active play, etc.

The CDC also offers a Mother's Day Out program for children ages 16 months to 36 months. Children with no developmental disabilities are eligible for this program at minimal cost. The Mother's Day Out Program operates Monday through Thursday.

Openings are available for both services provided by the CDC.

CSEFEL Conference

Shawnta Fulton of CCR&R recently attended a conference in Clearwater, FL, held by the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL). The organization focuses on promoting the social emotional development and school readiness of young children birth to age five. CSEFEL is a national resource center funded by the office of Head Start and Child Care Bureau for disseminating research and evidence-based practices to early childhood programs across the country.

The conference began with a keynote speaker who explored cultural competence and how it differs from cultural knowledge, cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity. Conference attendees explored stereotypes and personal biases in an effort to bring a greater understanding to their work with young children, their families and their caregivers.

The keynote speaker was followed by a three hour training session that included the CSEFEL Pyramid Model framework for addressing social and emotional development, school readiness and challenging behavior of children from birth to age five. This Pyramid framework includes four levels of practice to address the needs of all children, including children with persistent challenging behavior. The sessions ranged from Positive Solutions for Parents, to helping teachers make smooth transitions in the classroom and from Pre-K to Kindergarten.

CCR&R Appears on Television

Laurel Stone recently represented Child Care Resource & Referral on "Tullahoma Living" and "Channel 6 News", on the local public access channel. Laurel discussed the CCR&R program, Week of the Young Child, and the upcoming Community Fun Walk. Episodes of "Tullahoma Living" will re-air at 9 am and 6:30 pm several days this week.

CCR&R is hosting a Community Fun Walk later this month for fun and fitness. The purpose is to promote health and fitness for children and the community. Parents, children, and people of all ages are invited to this free event. Please meet at the main pavilion at Frazier McEwen Park on Saturday, April 24th at 10:00 a.m. The event will start with some stretches, then a short walk on the greenway and back to the pavilion. Complimentary bottled water, snacks, resource brochures, freebies, and a walking club sign up sheet will be provided.

Plans are underway for the 12th Annual Golf Classic to benefit the Marshall County Child Development Center.
The Golf Committee is in the beginning stages of planning the Waste Management Helping Hands Golf Classic, to be held at Saddle Creek Golf Course in Lewisburg, TN on May 12, 2010. All proceeds will go to the CDC to help fund the therapy program.

8th Annual Gobblers Gala

The Giles County Tourism Foundation will host the 8th Annual Gobblers Gala on the square Saturday, April 10th from 8-5. County Tourism Director Tim Turner says there will be a variety of crafts, entertainment, contest, and of course some great food.

The Child Development Center will host the 5K Turkey Run starting at 9am and early registration is encouraged. Area vendors are encouraged to attend the Gala with their crafts and wares. Vendor and Turkey Run registration forms are available at the Tourism Office.

Tickets are also available for the annual One Shot Turkey Hunt Concert & Banquet held at Cardin Distributing for an evening of great food, entertainment, and prizes beginning at 5:30 pm Saturday, April 10th. Scheduled entertainers this year include Jeff Bates, Darlye Singletary, Rhett Akins, Gary Morris, Andy Griggs, the Lo Cash Cowboys....and more.

The Concert/Banquet is the event finale for the same day Annual TN Governors One Shot Turkey Hunt/Jeannette Rudy Invitational held during the day hosted by T.W.R.F. as a fundraiser to establish public shooting ranges for T.W.R.F. programs.

Tickets to the Concert/Banquet this year are $25 per person and $40 per couple and are also available at the Giles County Tourism office located in the Northwest corner office at the courthouse.

Talented Child Care Resource
and Referral Program Manager

Objective

The Program Manager is responsible for overseeing the general operation of the Child Care Resource and Referral. This person will coordinate a yearly plan to ensure that the scope of services of training and assistance to child care providers is delivered as well as be involved in promoting the importance of quality child care and early childhood education throughout the South Central Region.

Essential functions of the Program Manager include, but are not limited to the following: Organize and administer the Child Care Resources and Referral (CCR&R) under the Community Development Center; oversee the staff, track expenditures of the CCR&R grant program; and coordinate the Partner's and Advisory Board meetings for the South Central Region. In addition, the Program Manager will work with a variety of professionals and resources and prepare grant proposals in order to enhance or expand the existing work of the CCR&R.

Education/Experience

The Program Manager position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a closely related field, three (3) or more years experience in working with young children, knowledge and understanding of child care programs, and community resources. Some knowledge of Environmental Rating Scales a plus. A minimum of (2) years administrative experience is required.

Travel

Travel will be required for attendance at training sessions and meetings that are necessary for the support of the CCR&R program.

Governor Proposes Funding Family Support Two More Years

Governor Bredesen is proposing to protect the Family Support Program for two more years. Here is the detail from the Governor’s proposed budget which has already been posted online:

344.00 Intellectual Disabilities Services Family Support Program
Eliminate recurring state appropriations for the family support program. This program provided assistance to 4,324 families of the developmentally disabled in fiscal year 2007-2008. Individuals served by this program do not have mental retardation. This program will be funded with non-recurring funds. $7,181,500

We must remember that this is a proposed budget, but it should be much easier to keep the money in the budget than it would be to get the legislature to add the money back into the budget after it had already been taken away. We also need to note that the proposed budget eliminates recurring state appropriations, so this is something we may also want to address. But the most important thing right now is that it appears that the program has been saved for at least two more years.

CDC Managers Meeting

The CDC managers assembled at the Shelbyville office in January to discuss Center policies and learn about new developments and procedures. The day long meeting allowed managers from all CDC locations to meet face to face and work as a team. Amidst the serious discussions of IT policies and current HR legislation, the group managed to squeeze in time for a little relaxaton and laughter.

Motivational quotes were taken from staff meeting minutes of the previous year and attendees attempted to match quotes to the management member who chose that entry for their staff meeting. Temporary consternation arose when it was time for judging and some contestants couldn't say with certainty which quote belonged to them, but an answer sheet was summoned and HR Manager Amie Newsom was declared the victor. Good job, Amie!

Congratulations also to Sandra Faulkner-Markley of ISC-Columbia who was able to match the most managers with their corresponding New Years resolutions. Way to go!

COMMUNITY PITCHES IN TO KICK OFF A GREAT NEW YEAR!

With the current economic condition, the CDC says Thank you to the communities we support for reaching into your pockets and continuing to offer financial support to our efforts. The CDC could not make an impact without your support!

A special Thank you goes out to Cato in Shelbyville for the consistent donation of clothing to the supported individuals of the Shelbyville Independent Support Coordination (ISC) program. Items include shirts, pants, skirts, sunglasses, accessories, etc. Cato’s generosity is very beneficial to the community the ISC supports by allowing individuals on a very tight budget an opportunity to have new and fashionable clothing.

BEI received two grants in the amounts of $5,000 from the Jostens Foundation and $1,000 from US Bank Corp. Wal Mart awarded $1,000 in grant funds to GEI and MEI received $450 in donations from the Tree of Joy. These funds will be used to purchase supplies, training materials and assist in the support of children in the community with moderate delays. The Information Technology (IT) department received a grant equivalent to $10,000 per month through Google Ads. These funds are allowing the IT department to maintain its presence on the internet through advertisement of our programs and linking interested individuals to our website. Thank you to all that have worked to secure and maintain these funding sources!

The Giles County Early Intervention Program extends a sincere Thank You to the Timken Foundation for their generosity. With their funding the program has been able to renovate their building, bringing a new look to the center. Items and improvements include a storage barn, windows in the classroom, a new door, flooring and paint for the center.
Cabinets purchased at GEI through a Community Enhancement Grant (CEG) have provided secure maintenance of children’s records. Other CEG projects include a washer and dryer, and a kitchen cabinet. It is overwhelming to see the difference. Thanks again to all those that have made this possible.

In appreciation for his support of the Bedford Early Intervention Program, Whit Turnbow was presented a plaque by Teresa Winnette accompanied by a BEI child. Whit has been a long-time supporter of the annual CDC golf tournament, and the winning professional golfer of the tournament for 2008 and 2009. In return, Whit has donated his prize money back to BEI. Thank you Whit for all of your support!

Community Development Center

Thank you for visiting the Community Development Center (CDC) blogsite. Our agency provides a comprehensive, Early Intervention program to meet the needs of developmentally challenged children, birth to three years of age.

A Family Support program provides flexible support to households with a developmentally challenged member.

The Independent Support Coordination component manages services of persons with developmental disabilites served in the Medicaid Waiver. The service areas of the program include educational, developmental, medical and living coordination.

Child care providers and staff receive annual training from the Child Care Resource and Referral program. Onsite technical assistance, strengthening families and the guidance of an infant toddler specialist meet the needs of day care providers.

FAMILY SUPPORT PARENTS MEET WITH SENATOR STEWART

Lucinda’s eleven year old son Derikk was there to represent the individuals, both young and old, who will be affected if the FS program is cut. Stewart is in support of saving the program. “It’s a matter of finding the dollars to do it, though,” he explained. Stewart committed to doing what he can to help. Partin serves on the FS Local Council. Coordinator Christy Jensen also attended the meeting.

Paul Taylor just celebrated his third anniversary working at Goodwill in Lewisburg, TN. Paul provides janitorial services for Goodwill and works there three days a week. Paul is a very hard worker and always has a smile on his face. His job coach reports that he does an excellent job and enjoys his work very much. Paul celebrated his anniversary by going to a banquet held by Goodwill.

A HOME OF THEIR OWN

Brandy and Tasha Braly moved into their new apartment on 10/15/2009, after being in a family based home for a little over a year. This is their first home as adults and they are very proud to be able to be “on their own”. On 10/24/2009, they were given a house warming party. Brandy and Tasha enjoyed receiving gifts for their home and having their staff and friends join them in the celebration. They are enjoying having a home where they can enjoy their pets, Samantha (Tasha’s Chihuahua) and Midnight (Brandy’s cat). They are slowly decorating their home to their tastes. Both ladies have said even though this change has been a little scary, it has been exciting too.”
